How to get people reading my blog. First readers

Julio 11, 2007 por talcomosomos

Before getting into our topic, let me ask you something. How many blogs are there right now that nobody but its author read? How many blogs do you think are there that the last post was written months ago? You are right, millions.

Why then so many people start blogging and abandon it before you can say “Sayonara baby”. I’ll tell you way: First they don´t get people coming to its blogs and reading the posts they write so enthusiasticly, not to say commenting (faraway from spammers: 10 spam comments for each proper comment); second, to write well is not an easy thing, you probably know what I mean; and third, they are unable to keep their blogs updated.

On the other hand, it is not as hard as it seems and you even may enjoy it a lot. My first advice would be “don´t start a blog just because every single person in the world seem to have one and its trendy”. My second one would be “start blogging right know. How is it you don´t have a blog yet, sure you have something to say to the world or are an expert in… whatever”

Now, let’s go back to the subject of this post:

If you are not under much pressure to get your blog up to the top in a short time, my advice would be to do things naturally.

First of all, get a blog, write in it at least once a week, and do it well, I don’t want to discourage you but let me tell you that none of the three are easy to accomplish.

Secondly, tell your friends, colleagues, customers, etc. about your blog and encourage them to visit and comment. I can assure you that if what you have to say interest them they’ll keep coming back and even they may spread the word.

And that’s it. You’ve got yourself your first readers.

The cell phone as a baby monitor and a hand knitted iPhone

Julio 11, 2007 por talcomosomos

A few years ago, when the price of wireless airtime plummeted, wireless executives sometimes talked about customers who used pairs of mobile phones as baby monitors. (The Browser suspects this is the stuff of urban legend, but a few websites do explain to the technically impaired how to perform this trick.)
Now along comes Babble Soft, an upstart that can turn a number of so-called “smartphones” into a different sort of baby monitor. (Company founder Aruni Gunasegaram, a mother of two, prefers the term “baby manager.”) Gunasegaram has created a web-based application that helps new parents keep track of feedings, sleep schedules and other newborn activities and milestones that pediatricians often ask moms and dads to track. A mobile version of the application, available for many smartphones, such as the Treo, allows users to access their baby data on the go. (Think Google Calendar for the diaperpail set.)

Gunasegaram says she came up with the idea shortly after her son was born more than four years ago. She found herself keeping track of his feeding schedule on assorted scraps of paper. She and her husband scoured the ‘Net for an online service that could help them. They couldn’t find one, and a business was born.
Now it isn’t clear to Browser exactly how many new parents, mom’s especially, will have the inclination (or presence of mind) to go online and enter data about baby’s every move. But Babblesoft’s product does have one nifty feature any new mom will love: It can provide tallys of how much time she’s spent taking care of her little bundle of joy. “Sometimes you think, ‘What have I done all day?’ ” Gunasegaram says. “You can look and say, ‘Oh, I spent five hours today nursing.’ “

Interestingly, they also ran a piece called Will the soccer moms buy it? in reference to soccer moms buying the iPhone by Apple (sooo much hype about the iPhone and sooo little time to read all about it). According to their source, 60% of soccer moms would not buy one. I’m not a soccer mom (yet) and even if I wanted to buy it, who has $600 + peripheral fees + monthly service fees laying around?!? I’d rather spend the money on my kids, a day at the spa, or building Babble Soft! Or better yet we could spend it on making our application iPhone compatible! But here’s something soccer moms probably would want to buy for their kids: a hand knitted iPhone! Daddy Types‘ mother created it. What a cool mom!

55 Places to promote your RSS feed

Julio 11, 2007 por talcomosomos

RSS icon
It is commonplace now for bloggers and website owners to have RSS feeds to distribute the content that they provide on their site. Many people keep track of the number of subscribers (I know I do) and wonder why their feed is not doing so well or why no one is subscribing. This has been the case for me, with the subscriber rate for Detangled varying between double and single-digit subscriber numbers.

The number of RSS subscribers you have is important because the more subscribers your feed has, the more visitors your website will have.

“A high subscriber pool can increase visitor retention, monetization and activity on your site as well.”

To help all of us out who would like higher subscription rates, the folks over at DotSauce have weeded through almost 100 RSS directories and stripped out the inactive, slow, poor quality sites. The 55 directories that were left are featured in a post at DotSauce and are active directories that receive visitors and submissions daily. Most of their links even go straight to the submission forms on those sites.

If you are in need of help increasing subscriber rates on your RSS feed, I highly recommend checking out this resource. With a little bit of time and patience, you should see things start picking up as word of your blog feed spreads.

Please, as a courtesy for this post, subscribe to the Detangled RSS Feed.
